BEYOND THE GATES — Art Inspired by the Eastern Cemetery
An art event sponsored jointly by Spirits Alive and the Society for East End Arts (SEA).

Thanks for joining us to celebrate this first-time event and the works of art that were generated from it! The official exhibit of Beyond the Gates — Art Inspired by the Eastern Cemetery has finished! Special thanks to North Star Café on 225 Congress Street for hosting our Artist Reception, to Casco Bay Frames for continuing the exhibit from Monday, September 17 until October 6, 2007, and to the folks at Portland's City Hall for hosting the exhibit in the rotunda until November 2, 2007.

Artists generously donated 20% of sales through Beyond the Gates to two worthy causes: replacement of the headstone of landscape painter Charles Codman, and the purchase of holiday lighting designed by Pandora Lacasse for Portland's East End.

Seventeen artists participated in this inaugural event and we thank them all for their support.

Background
To introduce and aquaint artists with the Eastern Cemetery, have them create a body of work, and bring that work to the community-at-large.

Artists in all media were invited to register and submit original creations inspired by the Eastern Cemetery by visiting, learning and perhaps working on this historic site. In June, July and August, specific days and hours were set aside for artists to take an introductory tour of and explore this National Historic Trust site. Works were exhibited in three venues and the public was invited to purchase to support the co-sponsor causes and the artists themselves.
