Although now used only as a shed, this board and batten Gothic Revival structure was built over the 1849 city receiving tomb at the Eastern Cemetery. With a paved floor, the fieldstone and brick tomb measures 21' x 11' x 7' and was used to store caskets during the winter until the ground thawed in the spring. In 1868 the superintendent of the cemetery reported a whopping 111 clients awaiting burial. The fence along Congress Street in the foreground of the photo (and its gate, not shown) was salvaged from Portland High School when it was renovated long ago. |
