Spirits Alive is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection
and preservation of Portland’s historic Eastern Cemetery
through a range of activities including promotion and education.

Advocating for, educating the community about, protecting, and conserving Portland's oldest landscape, Spirits Alive was formed as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the historic Eastern Cemetery. Acknowledging this historic landscape's importance, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Volunteers include Master Gardeners, neighbors, history buffs, cemetery supporters, and green space enthusiasts. Since its inception, Spirits Alive volunteers have:

• Planted over 100 trees and flowering shrubs
• Successfully advocated for more public access to the site
• Raised funds for and installed granite bench seating
• Created and led walking tours

Spirits Alive has hosted three special events:

• "Beyond the Gates – Art Inspired by the Eastern Cemetery,” a summer-long artist program
• Stone conservation training workshop
• Evening “Walk Among the Shadows” tours

In 2008, Spirits Alive plans to:

• Undertake a Master Conservation Plan which will help guide restoration, educational, and advocacy efforts for years to come
• Begin a stone inventory and restoration program
• Plant more trees and flowering shrubs
• Conduct a winter lecture series
• Lead new public tours
• Restore the Victorian Tool Shed
