Stone Group

Following the practices taught to us by Fred Oakley, a highly-regarded conservator, teacher, author and one of the founders of the The Association for Gravestone Studies, Spirits Alive is assembling a team of trained volunteers who donate time annually towards the restoration of "sponsored" stones. There were many photos from the day Fred came to town.

Goal: We will develop a prioritized list of Eastern Cemetery stones that we could repair in a year.

We held the first planning meeting on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the North Star Café. Our next meeting to discuss logistics of creating an inventory of stones was on a rainy November 3, 2007 inside the North Star Cafe from 12:00pm to 2:00 pm. We are updating our forms and devising a team and a time for them to make a try at our process of inventorying stones before we kick off the major task of inventorying one entire section in the site.

Those who would like to help conserve, repair and restore all stones in the cemetery are welcome to join us. We will train! Please go to http://groups.google.com/group/spiritsalivestones for all information on the group and forms.

Save a Stone Program
Will are looking for sponsors who will fund the conservation of specific stones. The money will be used to buy materials needed for the stone's restoration. Trained volunteers will complete the work of any needed conservation and keep the sponsor involved.
