Saturday, March 25
1:30pm to 2:30pm
USM Glickman Library, Portland

Our lecture series wraps up with Ann Gass who will present material from her book, We Demand: The Suffrage Road Trip. This will be an in-person event.
In 1915, four women left San Francisco for Washington D.C. on a desperate and dangerous mission to demand an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would enfranchise women. The story unfolds through the eyes of unsung heroes Ingeborg Kindstedt and Maria Kindberg, middle-aged Swedish immigrants who own the car, do all the driving, and fix what goes wrong. Among many other adventures, the women lose their way in a trackless Nevada desert and get stuck in the mud in Kansas. Can they arrive in Washington at the appointed day and time?

This event will be held in person in the University of Southern Maine Glickman Library, University Events Room, 7th floor. Parking is available in the garage on Bedford Street.

Sip a Little Alice Greele

Sunday, March 12
Starting at 1:00pm

As part of Maine Restaurant Week, our friends at Coffee by Design are unveiling a new line of coffees tantalizingly titled, “Spirits Alive.” The first offering is being debuted by none other than Alice Greele, a Portland 18th century tavern owner who was masterful with her pans—and who is also the namesake of this first new brew. It is said she flung a hot cannon ball, shot from British Captain Mowatt’s fleet, onto the street using one of her pans. Now you can talk to her about that infamous day and get a tour from her of Coffee by Design’s roastery.

Tickets are available The Debut of "Dame Alice Greele," Coffee By Design's Gin Barrel-Aged Coffee

Do you like cemetery people (the ones above ground?) Are you a good communicator who enjoys lifting others up? Are you organized enough to wrangle people around a good cause? If so, consider volunteering to get involved in our efforts to embrace people and their skills to help us forward the mission of Eastern Cemetery.

It would involve working with us on the ongoing task of keeping people involved, coming up with new ideas to find more of them, putting out requests for help from them, and rewarding them for their kind and selfless work.

Just send an email if you think this is something you would enjoy totally or even in part. More fun in 2023!

Guess what cemetery fan group has its own shirts, caps, playing cards, and tote bags? Spirits Alive does, that’s who! Visit us on Zazzle to view all of our products. Please know that proceeds go directly back to Spirits Alive to help us fund our work to keep the Eastern Cemetery cared for and to teach others about its wonders.
