Martha and Joe work on resetting a granite tomb box in Eastern Cemetery

Martha assists conservator Joe Ferrannini on a cemetery box tomb

Farewell, Martha!

Martha Zimicki has been a dedicated volunteer of Spirits Alive since 2008, serving in a variety of roles. As President of the board, Martha built a strong relationship with the city of Portland and worked to maximize the efficiency of its operations. She co-chaired a national conference in Maine for the Association for Gravestone Studies in 2011, bringing dozens of gravestone and cemetery enthusiasts into the state. Later, she hosted the Maine Old Cemetery Association, sharing the treasures of Eastern Cemetery with their members. Most recently, in her role as chief gravestone conservator, Martha led a large team of volunteers who have helped preserve more than 750 gravemarkers at Eastern Cemetery in the past 6 years. She also led efforts in other Portland cemeteries, her goal always being to teach people the correct conservation standards and methods. Martha’s patient and thoughtful leadership approach to conservation has left Eastern Cemetery’s historic gravestones standing taller, cleaner, and straighter than they have in years. We thank Martha for her wonderful contributions to the board, the cemetery, and the city, and leave open an invitation to come back and clean a gravestone (or 10!) whenever she’d like.

We, the Board and volunteers of Spirits Alive, are showering Martha and her husband Jeff our best wishes as they leave Maine for their next great life chapter—living closer to their beloved granddaughter! Martha will greatly missed and we know will never be able to replace her—a very special person and friend.

Fogg children grave marker

Grave marker for Charles Henry and Sarah Jane Fogg

Subterranean Celebrities: Charles Henry & Sarah Jane Fogg

In the very last row of Section A that mirrors the line of the Mountfort Street fence is a “double tympanumed” slate marker for Charles and Sarah Fogg. The left tympanum contains a stylized willow tree and urn in an interesting design—the urn is set in front of the tree bordered by a rounded rectangle that mimics the curve of the stone (we‘re guessing that’s what went on to the right as well as it has been broken off.)

CHARLES HENRY,
died Oct. 15, 1836
aged 3 years.
SARAH JANE,
died May 25, 1837,
aged 8 years.
Children of Jacob & Artimesia Fogg

A bit of research reveals that their mother, born Artimesia Tyler (assuming records showing various odd spellings of her name are wrong, but the tombstone she purchased is right) was married to their father Jacob Fogg in Scarborough in March 1829, and Sarah Jane was born in July that same year.

Jacob preceded both son and daughter in death, and he is resting next to them in the same row of Section A.

After Jacob and her children died, Artimesia married Elathan Taylor and they went on to have 5 children together. She died in 1861 at the age of 52 years in Kennebec County where she is also buried.
